Universe boss Chris Gayle
Christopher Henry Gayle OD (born 21 September 1979) is a Jamaican cricketer who has played international cricket for the West Indies from 1999 to 2021. Nicknamed "The Universe Boss", Gayle is widely regarded as the greatest batsman ever to have played Twenty20 cricket. He played a crucial role in the West Indies teams that won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, 2012 ICC World Twenty20 and 2016 ICC World Twenty20.
In all three of the game's forms, he has a ton of records. He is the only player in West Indies cricket history to have scored three hundred in a single match: a triple hundred in Tests, a double hundred in ODIs, and a hundred in T20Is. He also holds the record for most caps for the team. In T20 cricket, Gayle is the only player to have amassed over 14,000 runs and over 1000 sixes. Along with Brian Lara, he is the only player to score more than 10,000 runs for the West Indies in ODI cricket. He is also the team's top run scorer in both T20I and ODI cricket.
Early career:
Gayle began playing cricket with Kingston, Jamaica's Lucas Cricket Club. Gayle asserted: "I don't know where I would be right now if it weren't for Lucas. Perhaps in the streets." Gayle is honored in the nursery of the Lucas Cricket Club.
After facing criticism for participating in the IPL 2008 and skipping an international series a few months prior, he was named captain of the West Indies team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2009. In the tournament's opening match, Gayle amassed a rapid 88 runs to help the Windis defeat the formidable Australians. They were defeated by Sri Lanka in the semifinals.
International career:
When Gayle was younger, he made his international debut in the 1998 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, leading the Windies in scoring. Eventually, in 1998, at the age of 19, he made his Jamaican first-class debut. Eleven months later in 1999, he participated in his first One Day International, and six months later, in his first Test match. Gayle continued to make a name for himself as a devastating batter who excels at playing square of the wicket. At Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, in July 2001, Gayle scored 175 against Zimbabwe to register his first Test century. They added 214 in tandem with Daren Ganga to tie the record for most opening stands against the home nation.
Retirement:
Gayle's final Twenty20 International match took place at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on November 6, 2021, against Australia. He hasn't yet made an announcement on his retirement from international cricket, though. His goal was to pass away in front of his Jamaican audience.
Twenty20 centuries:
While representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gayle hit the highest individual T20 score of 175 not out with a 30-ball century. It surpassed the previous record held by Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum.
Gayle has 15 more centuries than his closest competitor, Brendon McCullum, to hold the record for most T20 cricket hundreds. Of his 21 T20 centuries, 15 have come without a break.
International centuries:
As of July 13, 2021, Gayle had amassed 42 international centuries—15 from Tests, 25 from ODIs, and 2 from T20Is. He became the first cricket player to reach 100 in every format of the game.
